Duality is Non-Duality

Good vs. Evil

Male vs. Female

Night vs. Day

Black vs. White

Sun vs. Moon

This list could go on and on. I’m sure there are other examples of duality that I missed that you could think of yourself. Like how if you took a look in the mirror, you would see that the left side of your face is a reflection of the right side of your face – 1:1 symmetry and that goes for any living creature.

It seems that whoever created this Reality that you are in right now was pretty sure that they wanted duality to be a significant part of the Human experience.

Even a scientist wouldn’t be able to deny the existence of duality. Is a sine wave nothing more than a vibration of moving up and down over and over again?

I’m sure that many of you reading this are also not completely new to spirituality. You know that there is a noticeable difference between good and bad. You know that there are people you like and people you don’t like just the same.

I’m here to prove to you that the fancy idea of humanity reaching “singularity” at some point has already happened. It has always been the truth for as long as Time has existed.

The source of a lot of my suffering was and perhaps still is the idea that good things are better than bad things happening. Obviously if I label something as “good” I would be pleased and want more of that, and certainly displeased if something “bad” happened and want less of that.

But it turns out that there is no difference. For the purpose of this article we are going to limit the scope of this thought experiment to your personal experience. I’m not saying that the bad things you hear about on the news or in the world are good and should happen more – my intuition tells me that someone reading this is going to think that…so we will limit this to your own personal experience.

You might have some grievances about how your life has unfolded up until this moment. Especially if you have experienced any intense awakenings or realizations over the years. You may have awoken to the fact that you suffered abuse when you were younger. Maybe your eyes have opened and you realized that most of the people in charge of the world right now aren’t the most altruistic or “good” people. And that to you is “bad.”

But remember – we live in a world of duality. To have good you have to have bad. To appreciate light you need to know what the darkness looks and feels like.

Even if you are healing from negative things that happened to you in the past – the most absurd irony is that those terrible things are going to help you immensely and lead to more good than you could ever imagine. In fact they have probably led to a lot of good.

I’m not trying to invalidate your negative feelings about the past – not at all. You suffered and it wasn’t fair. Absolutely – you did nothing to deserve it, and your altruism and kindness were most certainly taken advantage of.

But this is where duality becomes non-duality. Because of the suffering you endured you are a stronger person. You vividly remember all of those negative feelings, so much so that it might even cause you pain right now as you reflect on it. It’s engrained in your nervous system. All of it. So then one thing is absolute – that pain ends with you.

Because of the “bad” you endured and what you remember you are a better person. You would never treat other people the way that you remember being treated and the world is better off because it. And duality becomes non-duality because without that negative experience, you wouldn’t be as wise and intelligent as you are today.

And a paradox of your life experience is that those who hurt you the most helped you just as much, and there is never an exception to this rule. That person who broke your heart gave you an experience to help you know when you found the right person and never forget to appreciate them. Or maybe that person who broke your heart helped you pay a karmic debt that you owed to your Soul for when you (very mistakenly and unintentionally) harmed the heart of some other person who trusted you.

That person who made you feel bad about some thing pushed you harder than anyone else to truly realize how good you are, and so on and so forth.

Because there were people who just gave you exactly what you wanted, instead. They massaged your ego, made you feel “big”, made you feel like you are perfect and don’t ever need to improve or change anything about you…

But how helpful were they? No more or less helpful than those who harmed you and actually pushed you to become better. No more or less than those who pushed you to your limit and showed you what you are capable of by causing you to suffer.

It’s important to remember the importance of respecting the sovereignty of all people. You can’t force someone to change or to see the error of their ways. They are what they are and will only change if they or their Soul desires it for themselves. Just like how nobody has any right to invalidate your existence or the essence of who you are that you know you cannot change. They will try if they are broken but they have no right, and Ironically they help you just the same.

Another important thing to consider is that when you have bad experiences with other people, it might be because you, Your Soul, at a higher level desired to see the error or your ways – but instead of realizing it by yourself, alone, you needed to see that error projected into some episode of your life experience. Not that you deserve to suffer for some error you unintentionally made in the past, but you deserve to see things precisely how they are.

Reflecting on my own life I have been hurt by a lot of people, but I have also hurt a lot of people. Even if it appeared intentional or if I thought for a moment harming another person was the right thing to do, that would have been the result of my own ignorance or an error on my part. And I am so grateful every time my Soul shows me precisely how I harmed another person by giving me a life experience to see those errors more clearly, to ensure I never make that same mistake again.

And who am I to say that I know the intentions of those who hurt me? I can’t, there is no way to truly know the intentions of another person, even if they think that they know.

So rather than falling for the illusion of duality and labelling things “good” vs. bad, I choose to accept that things happen however they must happen, and that good, bad, left, right, dark, light, sun, moon, etc etc are nothing more than a projection of what my Soul needs to show me this moment, to ensure that the next moment and for the rest of my life, I am a better and wiser person because of it.
